On a Personal Note

Dear IT Professional

You made a smart decision to check out UCG as the potential next step in your career. We have created this web page to tell you about the company and what it can offer you.

UCG is a content-driven business-to-business information publisher. We use technology to serve our customers, and add value to our information. Due to the eclectic nature of our operations, we offer technical positions in many different areas, which utilize many different technologies.

We've been in business since October 1977 and started our first online information service in 1981.

Here's What You Stand to Gain from UCG

More Autonomy. Those we select to provide our technical services are smart professionals we trust to call the shots on project implementation.   Rather than tell you how to design your project, we count on you to be creative and to set the project's development course. As long as you're producing a quality product and meeting deadlines, there is little intervention from your manager, whose role is more that of a coach than of a boss.

More Challenging. At UCG, being an IT professional engages many of your skills, some you didn't even know about. We challenge you to be creative, and provide the best solutions possible.

More Money and Opportunity.
We pay talented IT Professionals top dollar, and there's no limit on how much you can earn or how far you can go here. If you're like most, you're striving toward a salary goal. To help you reach it we have removed the traditional barriers found at other organizations. At UCG, you can receive a raise at any time, rather than have to wait for the big once a year review. There are no corporate caps on raises, so you and your manager are free to discuss pay increases of any size, whatever makes sense in light of your past performance and the new responsibilities you take on. There are no pay scales, either.

As for advancement, UCG believes that people should be allowed to grow along the path that most closely meets their skills and interests. You will not hear a lot of 'That's not your responsibility' at UCG.

3 Promises UCG Makes to Every IT Professional We Hire

1. We'll respect you.
2.
We'll help you grow and develop.
3.
We'll give you the tools you need.

Let's start with respect. You won't find power-tripping managers looking over your shoulder. Instead, our managers play to your strengths and help you improve where needed. We know what it's like to tackle a new, unfamiliar technology, to work under deadline pressure, or to have a system crash unexpectedly. Rather than nagging and finger-pointing you get support and encouragement from a manager who's been there.

Growth and development. We hear it all the time from talented professionals who apply here for jobs. "I don't get enough support from my manager." Here you will, from technical managers who believe the best way to get the job done is to empower the person tackling the project.

Employee Spotlight
Mike Sinsky Mike Sinsky joined UCG in January 1994 as a Telephone
Technical Support Representative. In this role, he managed to
rewrite an existing software application. Not only did Mike
vastly increase customer satisfaction, but he was able to move
towards his dream of becoming a Software Developer. He
joined the IT development staff in September 1995, and his
tremendous vision and willingness to accept responsibility has
seen him through an impressive streak of successes and
promotions. In February 2004, Mike became CIO of UCG's
OPIS division.

“UCG provides a unique environment for career advancement. We feel like a dynamic small company, yet we provide the stability from a big company. I have had experiences and opportunities here that would have taken me years to get in other companies. Anyone with talent who is willing to work hard and appreciate the UCG culture will find that there is no limit to how far they can grow their career. It is inspirational to work with business leaders who started out in UCG entry level positions just like me.”

No matter what your skill level is right now, you'll be a better IT professional after just a few months on the job at UCG. We're committed to formal technical training and peer mentoring. For example, every IT employee is mandated to attend at least one training seminar in a new technology every year.  In addition, our programmers gather for in-house seminars where they teach one another how to improve programming practices. We want you to become the best developer possible. If your dream is to work for a large technology company, movie studio or even Microsoft, great. We'll help you get there.

What about tools to do your job? UCG understands that the nature of technology positions requires an investment in proper tools. If you feel you need a new workstation, compiler, system utility, or library -- ask your manager. Chances are that you will have what you need within 48 hours. UCG has no cap on the amount spent on development tools. We understand that they are not an expense, but instead an investment in increased productivity and better products.

Since UCG is committed to providing the highest quality products in every market we serve, we are routinely on the cutting edge in the technology utilized by its developers. Because we challenge our employees to find the best way to solve a problem, we have a wealth of different development environments. We don't implement hot new technology just for the sake of having it on our corporate resume. Instead, we use the right technology to serve our customers.

On a Personal Note...

Bob KoranMy name is Bob Koran. I'm one of UCG's six partners. I thought my story might interest you.

In the winter of 1980 UCG's founding partner Bruce Levenson was faced with a problem. He had an office in Bricktown, New Jersey and an office in Silver Spring, Maryland and a Thursday night deadline for a Friday OPIS publication. The data (wholesale oil prices) was collected in New Jersey until mid afternoon, then driven to Maryland where it was typed and laid out for publication. The process usually took until the wee hours to complete and the employees were burning out. Bruce contacted me through my wife (a UCG editor at the time) and asked me to help him prevent a mutiny. Two Heathkit computers and two 300 baud modems later we were in business. What started out as a productivity solution quickly evolved into one of UCG's, and the country's, first commercially successful online services. More than twenty years and many modems later Petroscan is still going strong today with it's data available at speeds of up to T1.

Today UCG supports more than dozens of electronic products and services on platforms ranging from Intel to Sun to Stratus to IBM, supporting NT, UNIX, and VMS. The best part of working for UCG's IT department is that you have the ability to work on a product one day and see it in production the next. You feel a sense of real accomplishment when your software is being used by thousands or more customers and is considered an industry standard.

If you have any questions about UCG or what it's like to work here, please feel free to contact me at bobk@ucg.com.
